Certainly in England we are seeing the hottest summer on record. Grass is parched, the ground is rapidly turning to dust and there is no sign of a respite on the horizon. If you are lucky enough to be able to water your sports field, then its greenness will stand out from the brown surrounds, just as the golf greens at Carnoustie stood out from the fairways and rough at the British Open.

In such circumstances playing football on a sunburnt pitch is not much fun – high ball bounce, hard under foot, unforgiving to fall on and even worse to slide on. Playing rugby can even be dangerous and many clubs and schools will be cancelling early season matches until heavy rains arrive to soften the fields. So, what is the answer?
Many will say this is when synthetic turf pitches come into their own. Green and true, available in the dry as much as in heavy winter rains, this answer is most definitely correct. But it must be viewed with slight caution. A dry, hot synthetic turf pitch can cause burns, in a similar way to a player falling, at speed, on a dry, grassless, natural turf field. The cause of the “burn” is the rubber infill which traps heat in the surface. So, next question: how do you cope with this?
There are three options:
1. Water the pitch to cool it down.
2. Use a system which has cool technology in the fibre and uses a natural infill material, such as cork, to keep the surface temperature down.
3. Play, but stay on your feet.
Of course, the latter is a risk, and liberal application of Vaseline to knees, elbows and exposed skin is recommended.
Playing on a synthetic field in hot weather does not damage the surface, the resilience from a shockpad beneath is not affected and most importantly, the game goes on. In contrast, natural turf takes time to recover; weeds that thrive better in dry conditions than grass, appear. So, stay off the natural grass until it has recovered, play on the synthetic pitch, but please use your common sense when considering the risk of burns.
When CCGrass, the world’s largest manufacturer of synthetic turf, developed their latest yarn, they did so to meet the requirements of top level football, whilst offering the durability and longevity that junior football clubs require to cope with the heavy demand on their pitches. And now, in Cyprus, at Paeek FC, a Cypriot second division club, players of all abilities are benefiting from the most advanced CCGrass artificial grass football surface.
The CCGrass Superb 55 product has been tested to FIFA Quality Pro standards, the highest in the game, and has passed with flying colours. The Superb yarn, is a real heavy weight, at 17,000 dtex and one of the densest yarns around with a thickness over 400mu. This means it is resilient, extra durable and soft to touch – ideal for all levels of football.
CCGrass’s new Superb 55 also benefits from a PU backing, which secures the yarn into the system, and allows for an increase in the product warranty provided. In fact, CCGrass believe that, with correct usage and proper maintenance, the Superb 55 surface will perform for over 12 years.
Paeek FC was formed in 1953, many years before the first synthetic turf was ever produced. Feedback from the club questions why it has taken so long to progress to synthetic turf of this high quality. Now they even have a FIFA certificate to hang on the clubhouse wall.
Local contractor, Excello Ltd. carried out the installation and company Civil Engineer, Christos Chrostofides commented: “The Superb product is easy to install and the fibre is strong and resilient. The feedback from the club is very positive.”
CCGrass Sales Manager, Ms Jiang, added: “It is one of the best synthetic pitches I have seen. The installation from our partner is excellent and the recovery from the fibre, when flattened under foot, is faster than other surfaces. The playing experience will be high.”
CCGrass is the world’s largest manufacturer of artificial grass, with over 40 million square metres produced annually and installed in over 110 countries globally. As one of 6 FIFA Preferred Producers, CCGrass meets the highest standards in manufacturing and ensures its worldwide partners are fully supported in every installation.
The advent of “Value Added” synthetic turf pitch systems has been a long time coming, and even now many installed pitches are only designed to pass the relevant field test, at the lowest price. Often, this can be at the expense of long term performance and ongoing value.
For example, a long pile (60mm) 3G surface with a layer of sand and SBR rubber, when laid onto stone or, worse, asphalt, can hit the highest football standards. But this system will need more brushing to regulate the deeper rubber layer, and is likely to see the fibre flatten quicker due to the hard base, eventually the field’s performance will drop and lead to earlier replacement.
In comparison, using an appropriate resilient shockpad, under a shorter pile (45mm) 3G surface, needs less SBR rubber infill, meaning less movement and reduced maintenance. Further the surface carpet is now on a smoother base, with a little “give”, that protects the back of the carpet. By reducing the pile height, the number of fibres above the infill can be increased, thereby improving and maintaining for longer the playing performance, as well as life expectancy.
Such systems can be tested in the laboratory to ensure they pass the relevant tests, but it is player feedback that counts as much, and the popularity of “system” fields is finally convincing owners, pitch designers and consultants to upgrade the specifications.
The only valid argument against opting for a value added artificial grass pitch system has been cost. Of course, upgrading a pitch by adding a shockpad will cost more; the extra life expectancy from the surface, the fact that a good shockpad will last at least two lifetimes, and the reduction in pitch brushing maintenance means that the long-term value counters the increased up-front cost.
At CCGrass we have developed specific football pitch systems, with our extensive range of 45mm pile heights tested with different shockpads. For more information on our “Value Added” synthetic turf football pitch systems, just contact us.

Amateur club football in the Netherlands has benefited from synthetic turf pitches for many years, and now Maastricht club, VV Scharn has a brand new CCGrass artificial grass football field for its many teams and players.
As one of 6 FIFA Preferred Producers, CCGrass has supplied probably more soccer fields than any other artificial grass manufacturers in the last 10 years. For VV Scharn, it was installed to the FIFA Quality standard. The Superb yarn was chosen for its turf. Superb is the heaviest duty yarn from CCGrass, with a dtex (yarn weight) much heavier than most synthetic grass fibres. This allows a softer feel without compromising on performance. But it is in the durability where VV Scharn will really see the benefit. The industry test standard, known as the Lisport Test, artificially wears the surface, and a good product would be expected to achieve 100,000 cycles. CCGrass’s Superb yarn has already passed 250,000 cycles and is showing no sign of wearing out.
CCGrass back this up with a 12 Years Warranty, unheard of in the synthetic turf world. The Product Manager of CCGrass explains: “All our tests and experience show the Superb yarn lasts incredibly well. So, for VV Scharn, it is the perfect choice, and we back this up with a lengthy warranty.”
VV Scharn’s new pitch was installed by CCGrass local partner, TOP Sport & Groen, and will be used by the club’s 49 teams. CCGrass Netherlands Sales Manager, Nimo Chen commented: “Football is such a popular sport and every player deserves to play on the best artificial grass surface. As clubs don’t want to replace their pitches too often, it is important that they are given the best value surface, balancing playing performance, durability and cost.”
CCGrass is the world’s largest manufacturer of synthetic turf, with over 40 million square metres produced annually and installed in over 100 countries globally. As one of 6 FIFA Preferred Producers, CCGrass meets the highest standards in manufacture and ensures its worldwide partners are fully supported in every artificial turf installation.
There is a reason why CCGrass artificial grass products have been installed in over 100 countries. Apart from offering the widest choice of surfaces, each made under an exacting quality control system, for CCGrass, it is very important to build a strong relationship with customers. This includes constantly ensuring that installed artificial grass pitches meet the highest quality standards.
Therefore, our sales teams regularly visit CCGrass installed pitches to check clients are satisfied with the surface performance. One visit happened recently in Greece, where our sales manager, Ms. Jiang, went to the Olympicos Training Field to check the pitch, which was installed in January 2016 by our local partner, TERRAIN, who carried out an excellent installation to the FIFA standards.
This artificial turf pitch is one of many CCGrass fields, which has received the FIFA Quality Pro Certification. The chosen product was Stemgrass, a strong, durable and soft fiber, which offers excellent play characteristics. Actually the Olympicos club also applies products produced by some other manufacturers. However this field applied CCGrass products has been the most frequently used and the players are very satisfied.
The Secretary of Olympicos Training Field said: “The young players are excited to train on the surface. It is perfect for intensive usage and suitable for extreme weather conditions”.

As the newest World Rugby Preferred Turf Producer, CCGrass was proud to host a visit from Ms. Deirdre Keating, World Rugby’s Technical Services Coordinator to their Nanjing office and factory.
Keen to demonstrate the world’s largest factory, with particular focus on the full manufacturing system, from color design, through yarn extrusion into the finished tufted turf, CCGrass Product Manager, Celina Song, explained: “For CCGrass, as the only Asian turf producer that meets the rigorous standards and commitment required for rugby, it was our pleasure to host Ms. Keating. Her visit allowed us to show our quality control and our wide range of synthetic turf products.”
Also to benefit were the CCGrass sales and marketing teams, who learned much about the game of rugby and World Rugby’s values and ambition, during a detailed presentation from Ms. Keating. CCGrass Deputy General Manager, Joanna Lee, commented: “Rugby isn’t a well-known sport in China, yet, so watching the presentation was very beneficial to our staff. We understand the importance of player welfare and the benefits a synthetic pitch can bring to rugby players and owners.”
Deirdre Keating said: “Our Preferred Turf Producers are the benchmark for quality in rugby turf and are committed to World Rugby’s Player Welfare standards for turf. World Rugby are delighted to welcome CCGrass to the Preferred Turf Producer Programme and look forward to helping them promote these standards across the industry, particularly in the Asian market.“
CCGrass currently has a number of rugby fields tested to World Rugby standards and are preparing to launch a new range into the rugby market later this summer. CCGrass Marketing Manager, Coleen Sun adds: “Ensuring the right system is tested can be a real challenge, but we are confident that the CCGrass turf together with our chosen shock pad systems will offer fresh choice to the rugby market.”
CCGrass is one of 8 World Rugby Preferred Turf Producers and is also a FIFA Preferred Producer and FIH Preferred Supplier.
